Course Description

This course is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge and skills needed to create a supportive learning environment for students acquiring a second language. Candidates will learn to implement research-based instructional approaches such as G.L.A.D., English Language Development (ELD), and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) across the four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Candidates will develop the ability to informally assess English learners (Multilingual Learners or MLs) in these domains and design instruction that is linguistically, culturally, and academically appropriate, addressing the unique needs of individual students. They will practice scaffolding techniques for ELD in language arts and structured English immersion, as well as plan standards-aligned ELD/ELA lessons. Instructional strategies covered in the course include comprehensible input, scaffolding, and critical inquiry, tailored to students at different levels of language proficiency. In addition, candidates will gain an understanding of the distinctions between students whose primary instructional need is to acquire Standard English proficiency and those who may have an identified disability affecting their language acquisition. They will explore the interrelatedness of the four language domains, as well as language forms and functions. The course also helps candidates develop socio-cultural awareness, pedagogical skills, and dispositions necessary to support MLs while fostering inclusive and welcoming learning environments. Finally, the course examines policies impacting MLs and reviews theoretical perspectives on second language (L2) acquisition and programs designed for this student population.Grade of B- is required in the course.
